BENEFITS COMMUNICATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ABB POWER T&D COMPANY

Samples of The Resource employee communication

THE OBJECTIVE

To provide an information network designed to meet the communication and training needs of human resource managers and benefits administrators in their challenge to communicate complex benefits issues and organizational changes to approximately 8,000 employees of ABB Power T&D Company at more than 20 locations throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM

As a result of the integration of Westinghouse businesses into ABB Asea Brown Boveri, Ltd., The Rodgers Group was retained as a communication and training resource for the newly formed ABB Power T&D Company. To help prepare the HR community to meet the special communication needs of their employees –while remaining consistent with the corporate ABB Inc. benefits communication program – RGL developed and implemented "The Resource," an information network program which included the following key elements:
  • Company-wide employee communication introducing all major changes.
  • Training and support materials for HR administrators, including presenter's guides, scripts and transparencies designed to educate managers at each location.
  • Q&A pamphlets for direct distribution to employees to assist with ongoing education.
  • Employee portfolios for purposes of consolidating all benefits information.
  • Electronic mail for timely dissemination of updated Q&As, timetables and plan changes.
  • Establishment of a hotline during enrollment for flexible benefits.

RESULTS

Of the approximate 5,000 eligible employees in T&D, only 144 kickouts occurred via the Voice Response flex benefits enrollment process, the majority of which were attributable to layoff activity in process, or recent terminations. With distribution of timely, accurate and useful information throughout the network, HR managers and administrators reported that the program resulted in the best coordinated effort in years.

AWARDS

RGL received IABC Chicago's Spectra Award for "The Resource."
